Ian Hewson

​

Ian Hewson is a marine ecologist in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at Cornell University. He grew up in Washington DC, and Canberra, Australia, learning to dive at age 11 in eastern Africa. He completed a BSc (with honors) in marine science at the University of Queensland, before pursuing a PhD in Marine Environmental Biology at the University of Southern California, which he completed in 2006. He then pursued postdoctoral training at the University of California, Santa Cruz, before joining the faculty at Cornell University in 2009. He leads the Cornell Marine Mass Mortality Lab (CM3L). His research centers on the role of microorganisms in mass mortality disease, discovery of novel pathogens of marine invertebrates, and surveillance of marine viruses through metagenomic approaches.
