Arthur van Ooijen

Unlike many of the other scientists joining the expedition, Arthur's academic background is in Mathematics rather than entomology. Arthur was taught his love for nature and insects from a young age, when his father took him for trips to explore aquatic life. After a brief stint studying dragonflies, he arrived at ground beetles (Carabidae) as his main object of study. He can often be found outside with his beetle sieve at flooded river banks and the like. Like other like-minded youth, he joined the Dutch youth association for the study of nature NJN (Nederlandse Jeugdbond voor Natuurstudie). There he organized many camps and one-day trips to show others the beauty of (ground) beetles. Bringing along (often old) experts, he aims to bring together the passionate youth and the knowledgeable. After joining the study group for beetles at the Dutch Entomological Society, other beetle families came under his attention as well and he broadened his study to all beetles. â€‹

Arthur will be on Saba from January 1-15, 2026. We will be updating our calendar with activity dates and times as we continue to coordinate our event. Stay tuned!
