Critter Quest â€‹â€‹

Following the success of the 2025 biodiversity research, the Sea & Learn Foundation is excited to announce the next chapter of exploration — Critter Quest 2026!

During the 2025 field season, teams of scientists conducted an extensive baseline assessment of Saba’s insects and other invertebrates, a vital step toward understanding the island’s overall ecosystem biodiversity and health. Their work led to the discovery of species new to Saba — and even species new to science!

Building on this incredible momentum, more scientists will be coming to Saba between January and March 2026 to continue this important research. As part of Critter Quest, public presentations and interactive field activities will once again be organized by the Sea & Learn Foundation, offering residents and visitors the chance to join in the excitement of real-world discovery.

Thanks to Saba’s remarkably diverse terrain, the research will span multiple climate zones — from lush rainforest to coastal scrub — increasing the chances of uncovering even more unique and previously undocumented species. This dynamic program will expand participants’ sense of adventure beyond the typical hiking trails, introducing new ways to explore the island through a series of BioBlitz events and citizen science experiences.

Stay tuned — Critter Quest 2026 is now being coordinated! Monitor this page for updates on schedules, presentations, and ways you can get involved in this groundbreaking biodiversity project.

What’s a bioblitz you may ask? Good question!

A bioblitz is a biological inventory or biological census. The primary goal of a BioBlitz is to get an overall count of the plants, animals, fungi, and other organisms that live in a place.

Why participate? Another great question!

1. Contribute to Citizen Science
Bioblitzes help collect important data on biodiversity, contributing to scientific research and conservation efforts.

2. Learn and Explore
Participants gain hands-on experience with local wildlife and plants, learning from experts and fellow enthusiasts.

3. Community Engagement
It’s a great way to connect with others who have similar interests and to engage with your local community.

4. Raise Awareness
Bioblitzes raise awareness about biodiversity and environmental issues, fostering a greater appreciation for nature.

5. Fun and Adventure
The event can be a fun, adventurous activity for individuals and families alike, offering a unique way to spend time outdoors.
