Saba and the Saba Bank were officially declared a Mission Blue Hope Spot in February 2023—the first such designation in the Dutch Caribbean. This global recognition highlights the ecological importance of Saba’s marine environment, particularly the Saba Bank, which is the largest actively growing underwater atoll in the Caribbean. Known for its exceptional biodiversity, the Saba Bank serves as a critical habitat for hundreds of marine species, including sharks, sea turtles, migratory whales, and rare seabirds.

The nomination for this prestigious designation was submitted by the Sea & Learn Foundation, which now serves as the official Hope Spot Champion. However, the protection and sustainable management of Saba’s waters are due to the ongoing efforts of both the Saba Conservation Foundation (SCF) and the Saba Bank Management Unit. Their work in marine monitoring, research, and enforcement has been essential in preserving the health of these ecosystems. The Hope Spot status not only celebrates this legacy of stewardship but also helps attract international support for continued conservation, scientific research, and public engagement. Saba’s designation as a Hope Spot affirms its role as a regional leader in marine sustainability and offers a powerful example for other island communities.
