Bart van Tooren

Bart van Tooren, retired ecologist, worked after his study biology and PhD almost his entire career in nature conservation, as staff member of the Dutch Natuurmonumenten. In his leisure time mainly oriented on plants and algae. During the Bonaire Relay Expedition 2023 he focused on the presence and distribution of stoneworts and desmids (a kind of unicellular fresh water algae), both of which very little was known. Due to absence of natural fresh water on Saba, only a very few species can be expected in garden ponds and open cisterns. For that reason he will support others during the Saba expedition, a.o. his partner Sylvia van Leeuwen (snails and slugs). Also he will be active in butterflies and moths.

Bart will be on Saba from January 17-31, 2025. We will be updating our calendar with activity dates and times as we continue to coordinate our event. Stay tuned!
