Jelle Devalez

Jelle Devalez is a researcher for pollinator related projects with a special interest for island biogeography. He is currently based in Estonia at the University of Tartu and focused on bee identification and taxonomy. Over the past 10 years, he has continuously studied and lived on the Greek and Estonian island archipelagos and recently ventured into the study of the Caribbean islands.

In recent years he has shifted from more fundamental ecological and occasional taxonomic work to habitat restoration projects and monitoring. He has also worked occasionally in educational projects about pollination and pollinators. His main study projects were the competition between wild bees and honeybees and the effects of grazing and fire on the island pollinator communities. Now, he works on monitoring of pollinators in farmland and the restoration of species-rich grasslands and wooded meadows in Latvia and Estonia. We also worked hard on the 10-year re-evaluation of the European red list for bees and national red lists for bees and hoverflies. The 2030 E.U. deadline to stop the decline of pollinators has set a lot of projects in motion and he plays his part for having ‘bee-inclusive’ policies, habitat directives, etc…

His side projects include a checklist for the bees of Bonaire and helping with data validation of bee observations on observation.org for several biogeographic regions. Occasionally he helps out with identifications for projects in less studied countries involving all 4 major insect orders.

He also explores nature with his 2 children and hopes to learn more about other biodiversity besides pollinators.

We will be updating our calendar with activity dates and times as we continue to coordinate our event. Stay tuned!
