Leah Fanning

Leah Fanning lives and paints in Ashland, Oregon and has exhibited her abstract and portraiture work in galleries throughout the US for the past twenty years. She grew up in the richly artistic city of New Orleans and then lived on the east coast for many years as a professional ballet dancer while also studying painting at various universities. She later graduated from Maryland Institute College of Art and also studied art in Cortona, Italy and at many art residencies across the US. Leah has had many articles published in national magazines on her art process and has been teaching painting and how to make your own natural art supplies for many years.

Leah creates what she calls “Earth Art”, by hand-crafting earth-based oil paints in the style of the Old Masters and finding inspiration from the deep woods of Southern Oregon. She mixes natural earth and mineral pigments with organic walnut oil to create an incredibly archival, high quality and non-toxic oil paint. She also hand-crafts her own watercolor, gouache and egg tempera paint using earth, tree sap, honey and eggs. She has eliminated the use of all toxins and solvents in her painting process for her health, the health of the planet and also the owners of her paintings (no off-gassing into homes). In 2011 she founded the eco business, Natural Earth Paint, which creates natural, non-toxic art supplies for artists and children.
