Starting in January 2025, The Sea & Learn Foundation will begin quarterly coastal cleanups (January, April, July, and October) on Saba, focusing on Tent Beach and Spring Bay. These cleanups aim to collect data on the quantity and types of litter, contributing to a global dataset on marine pollution. The standardized monitoring protocol, developed by the OSPAR Convention, has been used in other regions like Bonaire to assess trends in litter accumulation. This data will be crucial for raising awareness, shaping policy, and supporting litter reduction efforts.

Marine litter poses serious environmental, economic, and health risks to island communities, threatening wildlife, fisheries, and tourism. By collaborating with Clean Coast Bonaire, SLF will collect important data to inform local and global efforts to combat marine pollution. SLF invites volunteers to get involved in the quarterly surveys, and encourages coordination with their cleanup schedule to ensure accurate data.

2026 Upcoming cleanups:

Spring Bay: January 10, April 11, July 11, and October 10 from 7-10:30 am

Tent Beach: January 7, April 8, July 8, and October 14 from 4-6 pm

Gloves and bags provided as well as refreshments.
