Warre Van Caenegem

Warre has been fascinated by nature from an early age, with a particular interest in the enormous diversity of insects. During his biology studies at Ghent University (Belgium), he developed a passion for fungi and  became especially intrigued by Laboulbeniales, a highly specialized group of fungi that live on insects. The study of this group combines Warre’s early interests in insects and his newly developed passion for fungi. Warre has conducted fieldwork in Belgium, Iceland, Norway, and the Netherlands, which led to the discovery of many undescribed species. These discoveries highlight how poorly studied these fungi remain, even in well-known regions of Europe.

Since September 2025, Warre is a PhD candidate at the University of South Bohemia (Czechia), focusing on Laboulbeniales associated with bat flies, which are bloodsucking flies on bats, in Central and South America. The Saba expedition will be his first in a tropical region, where he will help inventory fungal diversity while also looking for insects and their associated fungi.

Warre will be on Saba from February 26-March 12, 2026. We will be updating our calendar with activity dates and times as we continue to coordinate our event. Stay tuned!
