Werner de Grier

Werner's fascination for invertebrate animals started early, already tidepooling and lifting rocks to collect critters since he was little. During his time at the University of Leiden, that love only grew bigger and shaped his academic pathway. Werner considers himself a true generalist, but his passion can be found in the field of carcinology: during his PhD-program at Naturalis Biodiversity Center, in collaboration with the University of Groningen, he published numerous studies on the evolution and taxonomy of symbiotic crabs and shrimps. He now works in econsultancy for WSP Nederland B.V., but he is still doing outreach in any way possible, trying to make invertebrate animals more interesting for the greater public. On Saba, Werner will tackle the terrestrial crustacean groups of the isopods and amphipods.

Lucas will be on Saba from January 28-February 12, 2026. We will be updating our calendar with activity dates and times as we continue to coordinate our event. Stay tuned!
