Anna Bakker

 

Anna Bakker is a marine scientist and remote sensing researcher who studies ocean habitats using satellites, drones, scuba diving, and geographic information systems (GIS). She is currently a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Postdoctoral Fellow at the Mediterranean Institute for Advanced Studies (IMEDEA-CSIC/UIB) in Mallorca, Spain, where she investigates how rhodolith beds support biodiversity and ecosystem functions such as blue carbon storage.

 

Before moving to Spain, Anna worked on coral reef mapping and conservation projects throughout the Red Sea and the Maldives, developing high-resolution habitat maps and studying the relationships between the mosaic of underwater habitats, reef fish communities, and varying oceanographic conditions. Her research combines satellite imagery with underwater observations to create biodiversity maps that help managers monitor ocean health and identify conservation priorities. She is passionate about making complex scientific tools accessible and enjoys showing that technologies like drones and machine learning can reveal parts of the ocean that would otherwise be impossible to study.

 

During Sea & Learn, Anna will take participants on a journey from space to the seafloor. Through hands-on activities and fieldwork, participants will discover how anyone can contribute to understanding and conserving the ocean.
