Morgan Chakraborty

 

Morgan Chakraborty is a marine geoscientist and Ph.D. candidate at the University of Miami who explores the stories hidden beneath the ocean floor. Her research takes her aboard research vessels, into deep-sea environments, and into laboratories where she studies corals that have recorded thousands of years of environmental change.

Using the chemical fingerprints preserved within deep-water corals, Morgan reconstructs past climates and ocean conditions across the Red Sea and Caribbean. Her work helps reveal how rainfall patterns, desert dust, ocean circulation, and sea-level changes have influenced marine ecosystems through time. By understanding how oceans responded to past climate shifts, scientists can gain valuable insight into the challenges facing our planet today.

Morgan is particularly fascinated by the detective work of science—combining geology, chemistry, and oceanography to solve mysteries about Earth’s past. She believes some of the most powerful climate records are hidden in unexpected places, including corals growing hundreds of meters below the ocean surface.

 

During Sea & Learn, Morgan will share how scientists use corals as natural time capsules and invite participants to explore the connections between oceans, climate, and the remarkable geological history that surrounds us.
