Sarah Walsh

Sarah Walsh is an ocean technology instructor, hydrographer, and ocean educator based in Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. She teaches in the Ocean Mapping program and the Master’s of Ocean Technology at the Fisheries and Marine Institute of Memorial University, where she combines technical expertise with a strong commitment to ocean literacy and environmental stewardship.

With a background in hydrographic surveying and geomatics, Sarah has worked with the Canadian Hydrographic Service and previously served as a geomatics specialist with the Centre for Applied Ocean Technology (CTec). Her work has supported marine conservation initiatives and contributed to global seafloor mapping efforts through the Nippon Foundation–GEBCO Seabed 2030 Project, which is an international effort to improve our understanding of the ocean.

Sarah’s passion for ocean exploration has also taken her offshore. She participated as a seafloor mapping intern aboard the exploration vessel E/V Nautilus with the Ocean Exploration Trust, gaining hands-on experience in deep-sea mapping and live expedition-based science communication. She has also been involved in global ocean advocacy initiatives, including an all-female diving expedition in the Canadian Arctic, which highlighted the importance of women in ocean science and exploration while raising awareness of ocean change in northern communities.

Sarah is also a Board Member with the Canadian Network for Ocean Education (CaNOE), where she contributes to advancing ocean literacy initiatives across Canada and beyond. She has also worked as a marine interpreter and continues to support community-based ocean learning through outreach and volunteer efforts.

As a Fellow of the Royal Canadian Geographical Society, Sarah believes that connecting people to the ocean through meaningful, accessible learning experiences is key to building a global culture of ocean stewardship.
