Saba's Science SEAkers Try VR
Sea & Learn's Grade 6 Science SEAkers recently stepped into the underwater world—without even getting wet. Through a series of immersive virtual reality (IVR) coral reef modules, students explored the reefs surrounding Saba while learning about coral biology, reef health, and the conservation work happening right in their own backyard.

The three IVR modules were created by Alex and Aaron Pilnick in collaboration with the Sea & Learn Foundation, and each one is narrated by local conservationist Dahlia Hassell Knijff. Using real underwater footage from Saba’s reefs, the first module introduced students to what corals actually are and how these fascinating organisms build the reef structures that support so much marine life. The second module helped students become reef detectives, teaching them how to recognize healthy corals and identify signs of stress or disease. By the third and final module, the SEAkers were exploring reef restoration work taking place around the island, including efforts led by the Saba Conservation Foundation and the Saba Research Center.

Beyond being exciting to experience, the IVR program is a powerful conservation tool. By bringing the underwater world directly into the classroom, immersive technology helps remove many of the logistical, financial, and psychological barriers that can prevent people from experiencing the ocean firsthand. Not everyone will become a diver—but IVR allows students and community members alike to explore the reef, understand why it matters, and feel connected to protecting it. At the same time, for some participants, this virtual dive might spark the curiosity and confidence that inspires them to one day jump into the ocean themselves.

The immersive coral reef VR experience also made its public debut during the Sea & Learn Foundation's World Ocean Day celebration, where more than 30 children and adults had the opportunity to explore Saba's underwater world—no wetsuit required. The enthusiastic response highlighted the potential of virtual reality to inspire curiosity, foster a deeper appreciation for marine ecosystems, and make the island's remarkable reefs accessible to everyone.
